Cider is one of England’s oldest drinks and is an alcoholic beverage obtained by the fermentation of apple juice. In Celtic mythology the apple was sacred, and they are known to have worshipped an Apple God, the Romans produced cider as an alternative to wine. During the Middle Ages cider was popular as it was used as an alternative to water because it was purer and safer to drink.
It is only within the last century that production of cider has become more commercial and moved away from the small farm presses. The traditional areas of production are the counties of Devon, Somerset Hereford, Gloucester, Kent and Norfolk.
