Belgium beers vary from the popular Pale ale to Lambic beer and Flemish Red, some of these beers date back to the age of the first crusades, long before Belgium became an independent country. There are approximately 178 breweries in the country, ranging from international giants to microbreweries.
What are now considered traditional, artisanal brewing methods evolved under abbey supervision over seven centuries. During the 18th century monks fleeing from the French Revolution, set up the Trappist Monasteries, their beers, brewed exclusively for the monks was renowned for being dark, sweet and quite strong.
